Denier to Grams   (03/29/2023, 4:34 PM)

Please can you tell me how the conversion factor for Denier to grams was calculated?

Denier is already measured in grams. It is the mass in grams of 9000 linear metres of yarn.

The conversion page states that grams is one thousandth of a kilogram, which is true.

However, I wonder if the conversion is actually converting denier to grams or whether it is in fact converting to grams per square metre (gsm)?

However, gsm depends upon how closely woven the yarn is in the completed material. This is dictated by how many rows of yarn make up the warp and weft. You cannot know this information from the Denier alone, since the material could be woven differently using the same yarn. So I think that it is only possible to convert between denier and gsm for a given set of weaving conditions.

Thank you in advance for providing some clarification.
