You need to know the substance you are converting and the energy density by volume.

Here's a list of common storage types:

The energy density in that table is in MJ/L, or megajoules per litre. You can convert that to gigajoule per cubic metre:

https://www.convertunits.com/from/megajoule/litre/to/gigajoule/cubic+metre

The conversion factor turns out to be 1, so the units are equivalent.

So an example using the table is that compressed natural gas at 200 bar has an energy density by volume of 10 MJ/L or 10 gigajoule/metre^3. So if you have 1 gigajoule, you have 0.1 metre^3 of gas.

The energy density will vary depending on the pressure of the gas and other factors.
