I don't know much about this particular subject, but this wikipedia page might be helpful:

Further down the page, there is also this quote:
"Most countries and languages in the world use the traditional long scale, with many using a word similar to milliard to mean 10^9, and/or a word similar to billion to mean 10^12."
Germany is listed in that section. So apparently, there is still quite a bit of variation among different countries in their numerical systems!
