Technically, spelling metre or meter are both correct in the United States.

Most of the world uses the metric system and would spell the unit as "metre" and thus "Newton-metres" for torque or "Newton/metres" for surface tension.

The American spelling is usually "meter" and "Newton-meters".

On this site, we try to recognize both versions, so you should be able to type in any variant and it should recognize it. The particular chart may list different spellings because of a technical detail in the database programming. But in general, both are accepted in the U.S.
