Multiplying by 2

Do you remember what multiplication is?

**Multiplication **is adding the same number repeatedly.

Here are some multiplication equations:

1x 2= 2

2x 2= 4

3x 2= 6

4x 2= 8

5x 2= 10

We see that they're all being multiplied by 2.

But did you notice something about the answers?

When a number is **multiplied by 2,** the answer is twice or **double **the number.

👉 **To double **means to **add a number to itself.**

Here's an example:

There are 2 groups of butterflies. Each group has 6 butterflies in it. How many butterflies are there altogether?

We have to multiply 6 by 2.

6 x 2 =?

If we follow the rule, we **add 6 + 6.**

What do we get?

👍 That's right! We get 12.

🤓 **Secret tip:** Think about multiplying by 2 as skip counting twice!

Let's try another example.

There are 2 groups of flowers. Each group has 7 flowers in it.

How many flowers are there altogether?

We have to multiply 7 by 2.

7 x 2 =?

This means that we have to **add 7 + 7.**

What's the answer?

👏 That's right! It's 14!

When **multiplying a number by 2**, the answer will always be an even** **number.

Can you multiply these in your head?

8 x 2 =?

9 x 2 =?

10 x 2 =?

You just double the first number!

8 x 2 =16

9 x 2 =18

10 x 2 =20

Great job! 🎉
