RÝmer is a disused temperature scale named after the Danish astronomer Ole Christensen RÝmer, who proposed it in 1701.
In this scale, the zero was initially set using freezing brine. The boiling point of water was defined as 60 degrees. RÝmer then saw that the freezing point of water fell at roughly one eighth of that value (7.5 degrees), so he used that value as the other fixed point. Thus the unit of this scale, a RÝmer degree, is 40/21sts of a kelvin (or of a Celsius degree). The symbol is sometimes given as įR, but since that is also sometimes used for the Rankine scale, the other symbol įRÝ is to be preferred. The name should not be confused with Rťaumur.
Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit learned of RÝmer's work and visited him in 1708; he improved on the scale, increasing the number of divisions by a factor of four and eventually establishing what is now known as the Fahrenheit scale, in 1724.
The Rťaumur scale is a temperature scale named after Renť Antoine Ferchault de Rťaumur, who first proposed it in 1731. The freezing point of water is 0 degrees Rťaumur, the boiling point 80 degrees Rťaumur. Hence, a Reaumur degree is 1.25 Celsius degrees or kelvins. The Rťaumur temperature scale is also known as the octogesimal division (division octogesimale in French).
Rťaumur's thermometer was constructed on the principle of taking the freezing point of water as 0į, and graduating the tube into degrees each of which was one-thousandth of the volume contained by the bulb and tube up to the zero mark. It was the dilatability of the particular quality of alcohol employed which made the boiling point of water 80į. Mercurial thermometers, the stems of which are graduated into eighty equal parts between the freezing and boiling points of water, are not Rťaumur thermometers in anything but name. Rťaumur may have chosen the octogesimal division because the number 80 could be halved 4 times and still be an integer (40, 20, 10, 5); the number 100, for instance, could only suffer this process 2 times (50, 25).
The Rťaumur scale saw widespread use in Europe, particularly in France and Germany, but was eventually replaced by the Celsius scale. Today it is only of historical significance.
